WHAT IS BIOSECURITY?

Biosecurity can be defined as a collection of measures or management practices intended to protect animals or humans against the introduction and spread of disease or harmful biological agents. Biosecurity is incorporated into daily, routine management protocols to protect healthy livestock populations, and also implemented to contain disease in an animal health emergency.

WHY IS BIOSECURITY IMPORTANT?

Disease spreads fast and effects everyone.

In late 2014, the U.S. poultry industry faced the worst avian disease outbreak in U.S. history.

First introduced along the Pacific Migratory Flyway (Washington-Oregon-California), the High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus quickly moved to neighboring flyways where several of the largest egg producing states were impacted. In Iowa alone, over 70 percent of the total flock numbers were lost. Turkey flocks were also devastated in northern states.

In all, nearly 50 million birds from 211 commercial flocks and 21 backyard flocks in 15 states were affected by the time the last detection was reported in June 2015.

As news of the outbreak spread, our trading partners immediately shut off trade from affected areas (states). Others imposed trade bans on the entire U.S.; China, Russia, and South Korea halted all imports of poultry meat and eggs. Worldwide, exports of eggs (table and processed) were cut from record highs in 2014 (nearly 6%) to only 1% of total egg production by the end of 2015.

How we protect the industry we serve.

There is little doubt that prevention of disease spread is critical and AgriOvum is aware. That's why our prime object is to use only clean and sanitized materials.  Through our joint inspection procedure we reject any materials that do not meet our clients satisfaction.  Our clients have the last word! We use disposable filler flats and hand wash our own racks prior sanitizing when applicable.   With more than 35 years in the business, we understand reducing potential disease exposure is key.
